Students Welcoming Students: Week of Welcome 2018

Cape Breton, NS

Joseph Chiasson, a Bachelor of Science (BSc) student at Cape Breton University is looking forward to the upcoming Week of Welcome on campus. Joseph, a local student who grew up in Albert Bridge, will be working as a student-leader during this year’s orientation. He says his own Week of Welcome five years ago was so amazing that it immediately sparked his interest in getting involved on campus.
“I got involved in Week of Welcome in my second year. After experiencing the orientation events in my first year, I was motivated to help others have the same warm and inviting experience I had. I’ve been involved with Week of Welcome ever since, and I continue to meet new friends and learn new things every year,” says Joseph.
As a student-leader, Joseph will be able to make incoming students’ first week at CBU enjoyable and memorable. He will help run Week of Welcome activities and answer any questions new students may have as they adjust to campus life.
Joseph believes having an orientation week is vital to the success of new students as it allows them to create strong social bonds with their peers. “It also helps highlight the University’s leaders and gives these leaders the opportunity to let students know they are welcoming, safe and encouraging,” says Joseph.
Joseph’s advice to incoming CBU students is to ask lots of questions, get to know your professors and become involved on campus. “There are constant opportunities to get involved and make a difference in the CBU community,” says Joseph.
Although Joseph will be graduating from CBU this year, he has been looking into the Bachelor of Education program at CBU. Joseph would like to use his experience and knowledge in psychology and his passion for teaching and creating helpful learning environments in his future career. “CBU has helped me define my pathways and focus on what inspires and motivates me,” says Joseph.
No matter what path Joseph takes, we know that he will make a difference in his community. We’re #CBUProud to have him on our Week of Welcome team and know that he will be an outstanding student-leader. Congratulations, Joseph!
