The Elmitek Program is Cape Breton University’s longest-running In-Community pathway program, offered through Unama’ki College in partnership with Mi’kmaw communities. Designed to support any Indigenous students in their transition to university studies, Elmitek (meaning: to show someone a path to follow) provides for-credit CBU courses delivered both in community and on campus. Over two semesters, students complete university coursework while benefiting from a supportive, culturally grounded learning environment that emphasizes small class sizes, peer connection, and Indigenous perspectives. The program’s name, Elmitek,  meaning “showing someone a path to follow”reflects the program’s commitment to easing the transition into post-secondary education.

Through a blend of community-based learning and gradual exposure to campus life, the Elmitek Program helps students build academic confidence, develop essential university skills, and connect with dedicated supports from Unama’ki College. The program is well suited for first-time university students, as well as those returning to their studies or seeking a more flexible and accessible learning experience. Upon completion, students are prepared to continue full-time studies on campus in a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Arts Community Studies degree, equipped with the tools, relationships, and confidence needed to succeed at CBU and beyond.

What is the tuition for this program?

Students enrolled in the Elmitek Pathway Program pay the same tuition and fees as on-campus CBU students. These numbers are an estimate for planning purposes only. These numbers do not include lab or accommodation fees. Please visit the Student Finance Hub for more information.
