Residence Upgrades

Cape Breton University is committed to providing safe and affordable housing options for students. This remains a top priority. That’s why we’re investing in student housing, right here on campus.

MacDonald Residence Renovation

In September 2023, CBU completed a $1.4 million renovation to their on-campus MacDonald Residence. These renovations added an additional 111 beds on campus, a 26 percent increase in beds from 2022. The MacDonald Residence renovation also includes the construction of communal kitchens, which will allow students to be able to cook their own meals and removes the requirement to purchase a full meal plan, making it a more cost-effective option.

New On-Campus Residence Coming to Campus

CBU has elected Joneljim Construction as the development partner of a new on-campus residence that will be built by early 2025. The decision for a three-level 12-unit building was made based on the needs of and feedback from students for convenience and flexibility with living on campus, and was the result of a recently issued Request for Proposals for on-campus housing.

Over the past several months, CBU has worked diligently with our community to create ideal learning and living environments for students. This project will enhance our apartment-style residence offerings to students who are looking for flexible accommodation options that suit their needs and budgets. This new residence will not require a meal-plan like CBU’s dormitory style residences.

CBU’s new on-campus residence will allow more students the option to live on campus and prioritize their studies, while enhancing the student experience. To read the full story, please click here.
