Kasy Benoit – Students Welcoming Students: Week of Welcome 2018

Cape Breton, NS

Kasy Benoit, a fourth-year student at Cape Breton University, will be taking on the role of student-leader in this year’s Week of Welcome on campus. Kasy is a Bachelor of Arts Community Studies (BACS) student from Arichat, Isle Madame, an Acadian community on Cape Breton Island.
In her upcoming role as a Week of Welcome student-leader, Kasy will be aiding in the preparation and facilitation of activities and events from September 1-9. The aim of CBU’s Week of Welcome is to help new students adjust to life at CBU while meeting other students and having fun.

As a student who came to CBU from outside of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM), Kasy understands the importance of feeling welcomed and believes hosting an orientation week for first-year students is essential. “Showing students around, both on campus and in the CBRM and informing them of the different services available at CBU will help them feel more at home,” says Kasy.
Kasy was originally drawn to the BACS program at CBU because of her love of sports and leadership. Not only does the BACS program at CBU offer a major in Sports and Physical Activity Leadership, which Kasy is enrolled in, but it also offers students many opportunities to become involved in the university community. This involvement is important to Kasy, who now holds a position with Campus Recreation and also manages the staff for CBU athletics varsity games. She enjoys the challenges each position offers, the countless friends she has made while working and the job experience she continues to gain throughout her time at CBU.
Given Kasy’s eagerness to participate in campus activities, she was thrilled when the opportunity to become involved in Week of Welcome arose. “I remember how I felt when I arrived at CBU and how nervous I was, so my goal is to make sure that new students feel welcomed as they join their new orange-loving family,” says Kasy.
Kasy’s advice to incoming students is to get involved with everything they can, whether it’s cheering on the CAPERS or checking out open mic nights, there’s always something exciting happening at CBU.
We are so #CBUProud to have Kasy on our Week of Welcome team and confident that incoming students are in good hands with her on board. Congratulations, Kasy!
