The next generation of innovators will be critical to finding forward-thinking, sustainable solutions to address the challenges of a swiftly changing world. In Nova Scotia, the Government of Canada is helping Cape Breton University develop the high-quality educational infrastructure needed to advance important research and learning, and help future innovators reach their full potential.
Today, Mike Kelloway, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard and Member of Parliament for Cape Breton-Canso, announced a non-repayable contribution of $3.5 million to Cape Breton University (CBU) through the Canada Coal Transition Initiative – Infrastructure Fund. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA.
This contribution will help equip science classes and laboratories at the University’s new net-zero ready Centre for Discovery and Innovation. These cutting-edge research and teaching facilities will help CBU deliver an enhanced learning experience for students while encouraging technology-based research. This project will further strengthen the University’s role as an innovation hub, readying tomorrow’s leaders to solve complex issues.
Today’s announcement demonstrates the Government of Canada’s commitment to support skills development and help communities adapt to a low carbon economy and is in addition to the $84 million investment towards the Centre for Discovery and Innovation announced in April 2023 by the Government of Canada, Government of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton University.
