Centre for Discovery and Innovation to be Named in Honour of Alumni Donors

Cape Breton University (CBU) is proud to announce the name of the new Centre for Discovery and Innovation in recognition of the extraordinary generosity of Alumni donors, Keith and Gail MacLeod.

Keith MacLeod and Gail Matheson attended Cape Breton University, then the University College of Cape Breton, and both graduated with their Bachelor of Engineering Technology degrees, Keith in 1978 and Gail in 1980. Keith and Gail both saw success within the oil and gas industry in western Canada and decided to give back to their alma mater starting with the establishment of the MacLeod Matheson Bursary in 2019.

The newly named MacLeod Centre for Discovery and Innovation stands as a symbol of curiosity, collaboration and possibility. It will serve as a hub for learning, innovation and hands-on research, helping prepare students to solve the challenges of tomorrow while advancing research that benefits communities across Cape Breton and beyond.

“For us, this gift is about creating opportunities,” says Keith MacLeod. “Cape Breton University played an important role in shaping our lives and our careers and we have always believed in giving back. We hope this investment inspires students to dream big, pursue their passions and know that others believe in their potential. We also hope it reminds fellow alumni that every gift, regardless of its size, helps build a stronger future for the University we all share.”

CBU President and Vice-Chancellor David C. Dingwall says the MacLeods’ generosity and commitment to the Island reflects the very best of the University’s alumni community.

“This remarkable gift is an investment in our students, our faculty and the future of Cape Breton University,” says President Dingwall. “The MacLeods have demonstrated what it means to remain connected to your alma mater and to give back in a meaningful way. Their generosity will create opportunities for discovery, innovation and excellence for generations to come. We are honoured to recognize their legacy through the naming of the MacLeod Centre for Discovery and Innovation.”

Since establishing their scholarship in 2019, the MacLeods have continued to champion student success through philanthropy. Their commitment to CBU further strengthens the reputation for exceptional learning environments while expanding opportunities for research, innovation and experiential education.

The naming of the Centre for Discovery and Innovation recognizes not only a transformational contribution, but also a lifelong commitment to the values of education, community and giving back.
