CBU’s Boardmore Theatre to Host Secret Shakespeare

Cape Breton University (CBU) and the Boardmore Theatre are inviting members of the community to experience an evening of theatrical surprises while helping bring much-needed technical and production upgrades to one of Cape Breton’s cherished cultural spaces.

Secret Shakespeare takes place Friday, November 7, at 7pm. The fundraising event will follow a “pay what you choose” format, welcoming audiences to contribute what works for them, with all funds supporting the purchase of a new production lighting and sound system for the Boardmore Theatre.

In this production of a secret Shakespeare play, actors are assigned their roles in secret and have only a few weeks to prepare without any prior rehearsals for a one-night-only event that is sure to be filled with surprises.

The theatre’s existing sound and lighting equipment has served audiences and performers for decades, but replacing it is essential to ensuring the space can continue to support high-quality productions, emerging artists and the next generation of storytellers.

“Boardmore Theatre has long been an important part of the cultural life of Cape Breton University and the wider community,” says Todd Hiscock, Creative Arts Coordinator at CBU. “This event is an opportunity to come together, celebrate the magic of live theatre and help ensure the Boardmore has the equipment it needs to continue bringing stories to life for years to come.”

Secret Shakespeare promises an evening celebrating theatre and the enduring power of live performance, all in support of a practical investment in the theatre’s future. Guests are even encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Shakespeare character.

Every contribution will help bring the theatre closer to its goal of a new lighting and sound system, ensuring future performers and audiences can experience the full impact of live theatre.
