Student leaders at Cape Breton University announced a donation of $30,500 to five community-based charities in late April. Capers Helping Capers is a non-profit organization that was launched in the summer of 2011. Each year, the Students’ Union hosts various activities within the community to help raise funds.
Through the generous support and dedication of CBU students, employees and the community, $6,100 was donated to each of the following charities this month: Caleb’s Courage, Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton, Pathways to Employment, SPCA Cape Breton, and the Every Women’s Centre.
Additional fundraising projects will kick off this summer, including the 15th Annual Capers Helping Capers Golf Classic in August. The incoming Students’ Union Executive takes office on May 1 and has announced their selection of charities for the upcoming year. Partnerships will be expanded during the 2025-2026 academic year to include the EPIC Youth Peer Program, Cape Breton Transition House Association, Jane Paul Indigenous Women’s Resource Centre and the Family Place Resource Centre.
“Capers Helping Capers is an initiative that the Students’ Union is proud to organize annually. It encourages project-based volunteerism and student engagement in the community,” says CBUSU President and CEO, Harsimran Kaur Antaal. “We are happy to continue our work with Capers Helping Capers and have set our goal at $20,000 for the 2025-26 academic year. By continuing this program, we will be strengthening our involvementin the community, which will be a major focus for the Students’ Union moving forward.”
