The Cape Breton University CAPERS Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams will host the 2019 AUS Championships from October 31-November 3, on the CBU campus. This is the first time in AUS history that one school will host both championship tournaments in back-to-back seasons.
“The fact that CBU is hosting both the Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships for the second year in a row is a true testament to the Nationally recognized programs that our coaches and student-athletes have built here at CBU,” says John Ryan, Director of Athletics, Cape Breton University. “Both our Men and Women’s teams earned the right to host when they captured their respective 2018 AUS banners. We are looking forward to a great weekend of some of the best soccer in Canada and we want to put on a great show to our guests and to all of the soccer fans here in Cape Breton.”
The CAPERS will posthumously honour beloved Cape Breton soccer coach Peter Kennedy by naming him the 2019 AUS Honorary Chair. Kennedy coached various levels of soccer from 1997-2010, and led his Tier 1 Selects Under 16 girls to a Soccer Nova Scotia provincial title in 2010. In the eyes of players, Kennedy was the kind of coach you wanted to impress, and after retiring from coaching in 2010 he continued to support all levels of soccer in Cape Breton as an avid fan. “Peter was a strong advocate for soccer here in Cape Breton,” says Ryan. “His energy and passion for the game was contagious and we are so pleased to be able to honour him in this way.”
AUS action kicks off on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. with quarterfinals as Dalhousie takes on UNB. The CAPERS will take the field for the first time on Friday, with the Men playing at 2:00 p.m. and the Women at 4:30 p.m. The games are free for CBU students and kids under 12, $4 per double header for other students and seniors, and $6 per double header for adults. Cash only.
