Cape Breton University to Celebrate Spring 2026 Convocation Ceremonies

Cape Breton University will celebrate the success of more than 1800 graduates on Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, at the Kehoe Forum during the spring convocation ceremonies.

“It is a profound honour to celebrate this milestone with nearly 2000 exceptional Cape Breton University students from across the globe,” says President and Vice-Chancellor, David C. Dingwall. “As they embark on the next chapter of their lives and join the proud ranks of CBU alumni, we are confident they will make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world. We wish each of them continued success and every happiness in the journey ahead.”

The graduating class, made up of students from more than 40 programs, will receive their degrees, diplomas and certificates in a variety of languages, including French, Gaelic and Mi’kmaq.

CBU will also welcome a new Chancellor, Jack Graham, K.C. who will be installed during Ceremony One on May 27, at 10:00am, marking a special highlight in this year’s convocation celebrations.

Madison Power of Sydney, Nova Scotia, will serve as one of the four valedictorians this Spring as she receives her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. Madison will represent the graduating class alongside Millicent Amak Mmekwe (Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Health Care Management), Sarah M. Doody (Bachelor of Business Administration) and Lida James (Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Business Management).

“Being named Valedictorian for the Spring 2026 graduating class is truly one of the greatest honours I could imagine,” says Madison. “Since attending the CBU daycare as a child, Cape Breton University has been part of my life for longer than I can remember, so this moment feels incredibly full circle for me. I feel very fortunate to have learned alongside such passionate, supportive and diverse students, and I’m deeply grateful for the mentors, friends, classmates and family members who supported me throughout this journey.”

Cape Breton University will also honour Father Norman MacPhee with an honorary degree during the celebrations. A devoted community leader and philanthropist, Father Norman will receive a Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, for his lifetime of service to Cape Breton Island and beyond.

All members of the community are invited to the Kehoe Forum to celebrate the graduating class. Tickets are not required; however, seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The ceremony will also be livestreamed at cbu.ca/convocation.
