Sport, Gender Violence and Self-Confidence with Sylvia Burrow

Join the CBU community on Thursday, March 28 from 12:00pm-1:00pm in the Student Lounge on the first floor of the library, for a presentation from Sylvia Burrow, Professor of Philosophy, Department of Humanities.

When marginalized athletes are subject to gender violence, they experience a demeaning, devaluing, and often threatening sport context.

Throughout this presentation, Sylvia will explore the impact of such an environment on an athlete’s self-confidence. She will be examining impacts on self-confidence from a philosophical perspective, which raises questions concerning systematic, structural and social conditions relevant to cultivating and sustaining self-confidence. Examining the question of self-confidence is integral to assessing how structural conditions affecting self-confidence can ultimately impact athlete performance and success.
