Join us for the newest Philosophy Cafe session: A Philosophy of Libraries.
School of Arts and Social Sciences Librarian, Martin Chandler, will lead this session on Friday, October 9, from 12:00-1:00pm in the Student Lounge (CBU Library).
Libraries are simultaneously contested as sites of social degradation, irrelevant because “everything is online,” and reduced to merely “the place where books are.” These views ignore the philosophical underpinnings from which libraries have operated since Ranganathan put forward his five laws of library science in the 1930s. These laws will frame a discussion of the current field of Information and the thinking that forms a basis for modern library work.
All are welcome and refreshments will be served.
