Two Shannon School of Business Students Earn $35,000 Frank H. Sobey Awards for Excellence in Business Studies

Two Cape Breton University students have recently received $35,000 business awards. Bachelor of Business Administration students Jacob MacDonald and Megan Penney are two of the nine recipients of this year’s Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies. The prestigious annual awards recognize entrepreneurial experience, community involvement, work experience and academic success.

Jacob, a third year student at CBU, can be found supporting numerous initiatives on campus from Week of Welcome to scholarship campaigns and more. His dedication not only to his education but to the overall quality of experience on campus shines through in all that he does. Jacob says winning the Frank H. Sobey Award will allow him the opportunity to consider graduate studies without financial burden.

Megan, who is pursuing both a Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Arts Community Studies, started her own business after discovering her love for the small business sector through CBU’s co-op program. She is now able to combine her passion for self-care with her drive to grow her business and says the Frank H. Sobey Award will enable her to pursue a master’s degree while continuing to expand.

“I am ecstatic that two of our students have earned this most coveted business award this year,“ says George Karaphillis, Dean of the Shannon School of Business. “ I am proud of Megan and Jacob, their accomplishments and their entrepreneurial drive. We strive to instil a spirit of achievement, perseverance and community building in our students and it is gratifying to see our students being recognized for these values.”

Each year, the 9 winners are selected from 30 of the most exceptional nominated students from Atlantic Canada, and we are honoured that Jacob and Megan were selected to receive the prestigious award this year. Their continued leadership both on campus and in the community is inspiring to all of us here at CBU, and we know these awards will help them continue to achieve greatness.
