Seeing the World Through the Student’s Eyes: Meet Dr. Dannie Brown

Dr. Dannie Brown arrived in Cape Breton in August 2009 for what he thought would be just a one-year contract; little did he know that the next nine years would prove to be incredibly transformative for his career, even in its late stage. Dr. Brown’s one-year contract as an Assistant Professor in Organizational Management at the Shannon School of Business led to a full-time position. Over time, he progressed to the role of Associate Professor and eventually earned tenure.

Currently enjoying retirement in his hometown Fredericton, New Brunswick, Dr. Brown, lovingly known by his students as ‘Dr. B.,’ says his experience at CBU was truly life-changing. “I thought I was rather global-minded until I got to CBU and realized how local-minded I still was,” he shares. “I gained a whole new appreciation for the world through the eyes of students from so many nations around the world.”

Throughout his tenure at CBU, Dr. Brown primarily taught introductory courses in the Bachelor of Business Administration program which have historically had high interest from international students. He adapted his teaching methods and approach over the years as he navigated the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of his students. “I was also privileged to see our students excel in so many ways – winning national entrepreneurship contests and case competitions, excelling in different sports at the local, regional and national levels all while excelling academically,” says Dr. Brown.

One of the highlights of his time at CBU was spearheading a fundraiser every Christmas that raised more than $8,000 in nine years for Feed Nova Scotia through the local CBC “Light Up A Life” campaign. “Everyone was so willing to contribute by baking and buying to make so many people’s Christmas more enjoyable,” Dr. Brown shares. “I served on so many committees and enjoyed social activities around campus, like Ugly Sweater Day at Christmas and the annual Lunar New Year celebrations.”

During his time at CBU, Dr. Brown was honoured to be the convocation orator at the ceremonies for five consecutive years, delivering inspirational addresses to graduating students and their families. Additionally, he had the opportunity to teach abroad in China on two separate occasions. These experiences not only enriched his own professional growth but also contributed to the global reach and impact of CBU’s academic mission.

Every journey eventually finds its destination. Though Dr. Brown’s time at CBU led to new opportunities closer to home in New Brunswick, his departure from the campus was bittersweet. “There were a few tears shed on my last day on campus,” he recalls. “Fortunately, I am still in contact with so many former colleagues and students and cherish every one of them.”

As CBU celebrates our 50th anniversary in 2024, Dr. Brown reflects on his time with fondness and pride. “During my nine years at CBU, I witnessed growth from academic adolescence to full maturity and was thrilled to have played a small part in it,” he shares. “CBU is an awesome university and has a huge impact on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada and around the globe. Continue to hold the ‘Always Orange’ standard, high!”

Dr. Brown truly believes that once you come to CBU and explore Cape Breton Island – Unama’ki, your heart will never leave, and we couldn’t agree more.
