If you thought meet-cutes only happened in movies, think again, because CBU-student-turned-employee, Lovedeep Kaur, not only found a new home, a quality education and a job at CBU, but her lifelong partner too. Originally from Punjab, India, Lovedeep decided to pursue a Bachelor’s degree outside of her home country and in January 2018, made the move to Cape Breton to start her CBU journey.
Looking back on her time as a student, Lovedeep vividly recalls what it was like being a new student in a foreign environment. “I started out as an International student in a country with a completely different culture from my own but thankfully, the support groups and welcome sessions provided by the University made my transition very smooth,” she says. “During my time at CBU, I enjoyed being a part of the vibrant campus life, where I attended and volunteered for many clubs, like the Multicultural hub, and countless events. All of this helped me make new connections and lifelong friends with people from all over the world.”
Lovedeep is the Administrative Assistant for the School of Arts and Social Sciences, where she works closely with faculty members, manages daily operations and assists students in navigating their academic journeys. “I’ve been fortunate enough to work in several different roles at CBU over the years, each of which has given me new perspectives and opportunities to grow,” says Lovedeep. “These experiences have been so fulfilling and helped lead me to my current position. I truly love working here; at CBU, the sense of support and trust has been constant.”
Lovedeep’s time at CBU, both as a student and employee, has been undeniably gratifying, but arguably the greatest part of it all has been meeting her husband, Anmol. “Funnily enough, we first met at the airport on our way to the University for our first semester. We were both new students, and as luck would have it, we even ended up having a few classes together,” Lovedeep shares. “That initial connection turned into a friendship and over time we grew closer. It didn’t take long for me to realize that he was the one. We shared so many experiences at CBU, from attending events and volunteering, to exploring the Island and adjusting to a whole new place together.”
Recently, Lovedeep and her husband travelled back home for their wedding. This trip was very special to them both, as they got to catch up with family and friends while enjoying a multi-day, tradition-filled wedding celebration surrounded by loved ones.
To students outside of Canada who may be considering CBU in the near-future, Lovedeep says they’re making the right choice. “ If you are looking for a personalized learning experience, challenging opportunities, beautiful landscapes and exposure to a new and vibrant community, then this is an exceptional place to be.”
