Despite already boasting a highly decorated background, CBU Alumni, Tushar Baraiya, allowed his desire to pursue further education and explore the world lead him all the way to Cape Breton Island. Originally from Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India, Tushar began his post-secondary career by earning a degree in Dental Surgery, where he went on to join Magnum in a dual-role as a Dentist and Health Officer.
During his free time, Tushar also volunteered at the Society for Women’s Ascent and Sustainable Environment (SWAS) Foundation to combat malnutrition in rural Gujarat. Before moving to Canada, Tushar took inspiration from his father who worked as a forest officer and started his own business which promoted public health, tree plantation and environmental conservation. “My passion for creating positive change led me to pursue a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Healthcare Management at CBU,” Tushar begins. “After thorough research on the Island, its natural beauty is what drew me in.”
Tushar’s experience with CBU has been immensely gratifying so far thanks to the multiple hats he has worn. Tushar has worked as a Facilitator, Microbiology Lab Assistant, Exam Invigilator and Student Researcher. He also contributed to a research paper on Indigenous Communities which he later presented. Tushar also served as a President and Chair of Enactus, representing CBU at the Enactus Regional Competition 2023. “I dedicated myself to supporting my fellow students,” says Tushar. “I always aimed to provide constructive feedback with the goal of continuous improvement in mind.”
Graduating in Spring 2023 with a diploma in Healthcare Management, Tushar had the privilege of representing his classmates as Valedictorian. Following his graduation, Tushar continued his journey at CBU as a Research Assistant. “This role helps me to utilize the many skills I’ve developed during my time at CBU on a regular basis, while allowing me to demonstrate how my academic knowledge can be implemented in the real world,” he says. “This role not only allows me to deepen my understanding of my chosen field but also enables me to actively contribute to the CBU community.”
Tushar feels his role reinforces the notion that, when a well-rounded education is combined with hands-on experience, endless doors with meaningful opportunities and impactful contributions will open. “CBU isn’t just a place of learning; it’s a community that nurtures passion, innovation and leadership,” Tushar says. “I encourage students to embrace every opportunity, try your best to excel in your academics and make a lasting impact on your community.”
Tushar’s experience has been one-of-a-kind so far, and he recognizes that each student’s CBU journey is unique. “Your journey at CBU is not just about acquiring knowledge, but transforming into a leader who can change the world,” he says. “With hard-work and commitment to your goals, you have the power to achieve excellence.”
