After a decade in business financial advising, Yvonne Fiawornu knew it was time for a change. While working in business development, she volunteered as chairperson for her company’s employee resource group focused on disability, mental health and wellness. This experience sparked her interest in health and safety, leading her to pursue a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management at Cape Breton University.
Originally from Ghana, Yvonne was excited about studying in Cape Breton. “The location appealed to me because you don’t always get to live on an island,” she says. “For me, it was an adventure of a lifetime.” The diverse student population also made her feel welcomed. “With students from across the globe, there is no way you will feel alone.”
With the growing demand for specialized safety professionals, choosing the right program was important to Yvonne. “The OH&S program being certified by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals was a major draw,” she explains. “The combination of experienced facilitators and strong academic foundation makes the program truly stand out.” Yvonne was excited by the work placement component, which allowed her to directly apply classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios.
Yvonne’s transition from finance to OH&S was greatly shaped by her internship with Alstom, a leading company in the transportation sector. “Working with Alstom showed me that OH&S applies to any industry,” she says. “I got to interact with professionals within the field and learned about the transportation industry, which was totally new to me.” During her internship, Yvonne contributed to the GO Expansion project, gaining valuable insight into track protection and required permits. Additionally, she participated in training, toolbox talks and presentations.
As part of the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) team, Yvonne helped with day-to-day administration and continuity of the Health & Safety Management System, statistics reporting, office inspections, personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety supply inventory management. “I took time to understand the various scopes of work on the project and the consortium,” she shares. “This project will transform mobility in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, and I am proud to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime endeavour.”
Her successful performance during the internship led to an extended contract with Alstom, where she now takes on additional responsibilities. “I now conduct project safety and environment orientation for new joiners and periodically join the EHS team for site visits,” Yvonne explains. “Working on the GO Expansion project, my role involves ensuring that everyone is trained and aware of the health and safety requirements, so that all employees can return home safely each day. I love what I am doing, and my team is supportive and encouraging of my ideas! It is an amazing opportunity to learn and grow.”
With graduation on the horizon, Yvonne reflects on her time at CBU. “I am excited to reunite and graduate alongside the friends I’ve made here,” she says. The faculty members of the School of Education and Health, along with her family and friends have been a strong support system for Yvonne throughout her academic and internship journey. “They believe in me and are always there to listen to my challenges, offering guidance, support and encouragement,” she shares. “Sometimes, all you need is a kind word from someone who believes in you.” Yvonne is also appreciative of the staff in Student Affairs for their support throughout her internship.
With determination and the right opportunities, Yvonne has found her new path in a field that aligns with her passion for making a real impact on the safety and well-being of others. Reflecting on her journey, she encourages international students considering a career shift to explore the OH&S program. “The program is highly relevant to the job market, and the opportunities are endless,” she says. “If you’re looking for a career where you can make a difference, this program is definitely worth pursuing.”
