Returning to University: It’s Easier Than You Think [3min read]

Reaching your life goals isn’t always easy.

For many, life takes unexpected twists and turns and the goals that you’ve set for yourself can fade into the background as other priorities emerge. It doesn’t mean the goal wasn’t important or that it needs to stay on the back burner forever, it just means that this particular goal needs to be revisited at a better time.

So, with that being said, we wrote this blog for all of those who put the goal of completing a university degree on the back burner. Whatever the reason for putting your studies on hold, we want you to know that it’s easy to pick up where you left off, if you are ready. Completing your degree may be closer than you think!

The first step to return to the classroom is requesting a degree audit. This is where members of our Enrolment Services team will review your transcript so they can find out exactly what courses you’ve already received credit for and then figure out exactly what courses you still need in order to cross that finish line (complete your degree).

After your degree audit has been completed, the next step is to connect with an Academic Advisor. Academic Advisors help ensure you choose courses to best fit your interests and academic needs.

The other thing you need to know is that at Cape Breton University, our staff and faculty experts are available to support, guide and cheer for you. Our number one goal is your success. Whether you need support in applying for financial aid, finding the right career path, academic success coaching or advising, we’ve got you covered.

Picking up a goal where you left off may seem particularly intimidating, but know that you’re not in this alone. Along with our support staff who are here for you to lean on, take comfort in knowing that many others have made the return to the classroom after time away, and have now been able to check the goal of completing a university degree off of their bucket list!

“The funny thing about life is that it throws you curveballs when you least expect it. If you we’re to ask me if I saw a career change in my future, I would have laughed and said not a chance! There was no other institution I wanted to attend when choosing to dive back into my studies. The experience is completely different compared to my first time around, I have found my passion and I am invested in my learning.”Deanna Harvey, BBA’06, current BScN student

“While away from my studies, returning to CBU was something I always thought about. I missed the energetic camps life, the people and events but most of all, I yearned for the sense of accomplishment that only finishing my degree could provide.” – Keven Taylor, BACS’13, Owner of Island Sauce Co. and Caper Paper

Cape Breton University graduates are critical thinkers, problem solvers and, ultimately, competitive job candidates in their fields of choice. So, if you’re ready, take the first step in joining our CBU alumni family and lead the way in whichever field ignites your passion. We can’t wait to see you again.
