The Department of Health Sciences in the School of Education and Health at CBU invites applications for a full-time continuing position of Occupational Health and Safety Management at the rank of Instructor. This position will commence December 1, 2023 (or as soon as possible thereafter).

One of Canada’s youngest and most ambitious universities, CBU recognizes its location on Cape Breton Island as part of Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. CBU offers a comprehensive set of liberal arts, science, and professional programs and a unique commitment to community, economic development, aboriginal learning, and research into many aspects of environment and culture. Currently home to approximately 7000 students, CBU’s vision of higher education allows students to pursue diverse fields of study in programs with national reputations in final year student satisfaction, faculty-student interaction, and employability.

CBU delivers an authentic multicultural experience to all who become part of its academic community. Surrounded by pristine natural landscape, vibrant culture, and welcoming communities on Canada’s stunning east coast, CBU attracts students from more than 50 countries around the world. Our faculty bring passion to their teaching and research and we are known for our friendly and inclusive culture. Strong community involvement and a spirit of entrepreneurship enhance CBU’s position in post-secondary education.

The successful candidate will be expected to enrol in CBU’s University Teacher’s Program upon hiring.

The successful candidate will mainly teach courses in the Occupational Health and Safety Management Post Baccalaureate Diploma, but may also teach courses within the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public Health) program. Courses may include occupational health and safety legislation, occupational health and safety management, organizational risk management, workplace health and wellness, occupational hygiene, and environmental health risk assessment, or any other courses deemed appropriate.

This program is one of the only post baccalaureate diplomas in OHS within the Maritimes.  The university will be seeking accreditation with the BCRSP (Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals).  CBU has established excellent working and research relationships which provides an opportunity for collaboration with colleagues, community, agencies, and industry on research/development/remediation projects.

Applicants should have an appropriate undergraduate degree, and be pursuing or already have obtained a Master’s degree in an appropriate field. As well, applicants must have a minimum of 5 years of practice within their field of expertise, either in the public sector as an occupational health and safety practitioner. Candidates with teaching experience at the post-secondary level are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates with a certification such as CPHI, RM, CIH, ROH, ROHT or CRSP are preferred.

CBU teaches programs on campus, off campus in locations across Canada, on-line, and off campus in locations outside Canada. The university and its partners will therefore provide opportunities for instructors to teach in different modes in different locations as part of their regular workload. While these opportunities may not be available equally for all instructor positions in all programs, a clear willingness to teach in different modes and locations will be noted as part of your application.

The union affiliation for this position is with the Nova Scotia Government & General Employees Union, local 18, Teachers Bargaining Unit.
