Assistant Professor, French

  • Location: Communication & Languages
  • Competition Number: FCS1911
  • Deadline: December 12, 2019 at 4:00 pm

CBU invites applications for a tenure-track position in the School of Arts & Social Sciences at the rank of Assistant Professor to commence July 2020.

One of Canada’s youngest and most ambitious universities, CBU recognizes its location on Cape Breton Island as part of Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. CBU offers a comprehensive set of liberal arts, science, and professional programs and a unique commitment to community, economic development, aboriginal learning, and research into many aspects of environment and culture. Currently home to approximately 6000 students, CBU’s vision of higher education allows students to pursue diverse fields of study in programs with national reputations in final year student satisfaction, faculty-student interaction, and employability.

CBU delivers an authentic multicultural experience to all who become part of its academic community. Our faculty bring passion to their teaching and research, and we are known for our smaller class sizes as well as our friendly and inclusive culture. Strong community involvement and a spirit of entrepreneurship enhance CBU’s position in post-secondary education.

Reporting to the Dean, the successful candidate will focus on the development of critical, creative and communicative skills, enabling students to better understand and interact with the world around them. Now more than ever, the most important skill for any educated person is advanced literacy. Not just the ability to read, but to read critically, to analyze and to question.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate potential and commitment with regard to teaching, research/creative/scholarly activities and service to Cape Breton University, community and profession.

CBU teaches programs on campus, off campus in locations across and outside of Canada, and on-line. The university and its partners will therefore provide opportunities for faculty members to teach in different modes in different locations as part of their regular workload. While these opportunities may not be available equally for all faculty positions in all programs, a clear willingness to teach in different modes and locations will be noted as part of your application.

Candidates must be bilingual (English & French). They should have a relevant PhD (or be near completion), preferably in French or Francophone Literatures.

The ideal candidate’s primary area of teaching responsibility will be courses in French/ Francophone Literatures and Culture.

The candidate’s second area of teaching responsibility will be determined based on appropriate qualifications. The secondary area will be chosen from English (ENGL), Communication (COMM), or Community Studies (COMS) courses.

English courses may include first-year writing courses.

Communication courses may include public speaking and intercultural communication courses.

Community Studies courses are core to CBU’s BACS degree. These core courses arm students with skills to be an engaged citizen and a confident contributor in their communities. The fundamental objectives of the COMS core courses are:

  • Job acquisition skills, job retention skills, a professional work ethic, skills of adaptation, occupational skills, and vocational awareness.
  • An understanding of the philosophy, values, policies and procedures of particular organizations.
  • The integration of theory and practice.
  • An understanding of the relationship between the placement activities and the wider community.

The search committee will rank very highly candidates who have a demonstrated experiential learning teaching style. Previous teaching experience at the undergraduate level in these areas and a willingness to teach in closely related areas of study and/or other faculties are thus a strong preference for this position.

The union affiliation of this position is with the Cape Breton University Faculty Association.

Qualified candidates should send a letter of application quoting the reference number (FCS1911), a complete dossier including a curriculum vitae, a statement of research and teaching interests, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and three current letters of reference (sent directly to CBU) to the Human Resources Department. Applications must be received by 4:00 p.m. 12 December 2019. Applicants who apply by email (pdf format preferred) will receive a return email confirming receipt.

Cape Breton University is strongly committed to fostering diversity within our community. We welcome those who would contribute to the further diversification of our staff, our faculty and its scholarship including, but not limited to, women, visible minorities, Aboriginal people, persons with disabilities, and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity. Please note that all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply but applications from Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
