Are you an ardent advocate for equity in science and engineering? If so, the Island WISE group at Cape Breton University is hiring a Social Media & Logistics Coordinator who will help organize and promote events to connect and empower students, particularly those underrepresented in STEM. Island WISE is a program designed to bring STEM activities to young girls, women, and underrepresented groups across all of Cape Breton Island. We strive to provide a diversity of events and reach as many communities as possible. We promote early education of young women in STEM through Island WISE Retreats and Girl STEM Saturdays; we provide accessible and exemplar role models and mentors in informal and formal settings; and we also provide the opportunity for fun and exciting hands-on learning.

Duties

The applicant will be employed part time for 10 weeks as the Island WISE Social Media & Logistics Coordinator. You will work with Island WISE members including the Island WISE Outreach Education Manager to plan, organize, promote, and lead STEM events for underrepresented groups. Upcoming events include Island WISE retreats and GirlSTEM Saturdays. As well, the coordinator will be responsible for developing safety plans and perform safety survey for each event. They will also prepare and compile data for event surveys and prepare after event reports with recommendations for improvements for future events.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • 2nd, 3rd or 4th year B. Sc. or B. Eng. Student or B.Ed. student (Science/Math)
  • Previous outreach experience is a definite asset.
  • Passionate about STEM and Island WISE and willing to help us grow.
  • Effective and confident presenter and group leader
  • Takes initiative and solves problems. • Detail-oriented and deadline driven, with a keen sense of organization; always aims for excellence.
  • Comfortable multi-tasking and working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong computer skills and competency with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook, and Canva (for poster development)
  • Familiarization with social media platforms (Facebook, twitter, Instagram, Tic-Tok) would be an asset.
  • Effective oral / written communication, organizational, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Eligibility:

Students must be enrolled full time and in good academic standing at Cape Breton University
