RECENT OR POTENTIAL GRADS: Exhibitions & Programming Assistant

Duration: (28 weeks, 32.5 hours per week) Beginning September 2, 2025; Ending March 10, 2026

Rate: $20.00 per hour

Language Requirement: English, reading and speaking. Facility in Mi’kmaq is a strong asset

The Exhibitions & Programming Assistant will work with the CBU Art Gallery Curator, visiting artists and the Gallery’s programming partners. The successful candidate will assist with the delivery, installation, de-installation and programming of one group and two solo exhibitions of work by contemporary and regional artists. The exhibitions will each address content related to multiculturalism, environmentalism, regional, national and international history, and issues in contemporary discourse on the arts. Knowledge and understanding of this content and the related discourse will be considered a strong asset. The successful candidate will also act as a gallery attendant, working directly with the public, and generally assisting in various day-to-day gallery operations; s/he/they will be responsible for periodically delivering public outreach programming; s/he/they will assist the Curator with collections care and collections management duties; s/he/they will perform data gathering and organization for the Gallery’s digital collections management files and small reference library holdings.

The Cape Breton University Art Gallery works to broaden and enhance the knowledge, understanding, enjoyment and appreciation of contemporary and historical accomplishments in the visual arts. The gallery is seeking a flexible candidate with diverse strengths to assist with day-to-day, exhibition production, gallery events planning, and special projects work. S/he/they should be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and internet applications. Familiarity with Adobe In-Design and or Photoshop is an asset. The candidate must have excellent oral and written language skills. Reading and / or speaking facility in Mi’kmaq will be considered a strong asset for the position. The candidate should have strong interpersonal, planning, and organizational, and time management skills. S/he/they must also possess the ability to work independently and/or collaboratively with others to achieve overall goals and objectives.

This project will also provide the intern with excellent professional development and networking opportunities. The candidate will also gain experience and knowledge of a breadth of roles related to work in an art gallery and in general, a public cultural institution.
