Reporting To: Senior Library Technician, Circulation Services & Outreach
Cape Breton University Library is the primary academic information resource for Cape Breton University. The Library promotes learning, supports teaching, and enhances scholarly, research and creative activities by building collections and providing expert services and innovative access to information.
Purpose: Reporting to the Senior Library Technician, Circulation Services & Outreach, the Student Assistant will assist staff with daily, routine library operations. Duties will include shelving, sorting and retrieving circulating materials, shelf reading and carrying out other duties as required.
Responsibilities:
- Provide printing, photocopying, and scanning instruction to patrons
- Monitor paper supply in copiers and printers
- Assist with 3D printing
- Digitize documents and photographs
- Shelve and retrieve books and other items
- Shelf-read and maintain the stacks and other collections for proper call number order
- Shift books in areas that have become compacted
- Search the stacks for books reported missing or billed for replacement
- Identify books needing repair and report to supervisor
- Assist with set-up for library activities and events
- Assist patrons and staff in event of emergency
- Provide direction to patrons in a professional manner
- Perform basic office/clerical functions such as photocopying, scanning, and delivering documents to other departments
- Assist with opening and closing procedures
- Report maintenance or security problems (lights out, graffiti , broken furniture, etc.) to supervisor
- Follow library policy and procedures
- Ensure furniture is arranged according to the seating plan, moving furniture items as necessary
Qualifications:
- Excellent customer service skills
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively with others in a team environment
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with attention to detail
- Working knowledge of computers and office equipment (printers/copiers, scanners, etc.)
- Effective oral and written communication and time management skills
- Demonstrated ability to cope with diverse tasks and be adaptable
- Ability to perform routine tasks and operate simple equipment
- Ability to maintain visual and mental concentration for long periods
- Ability to perform manual labour including: frequent changes from sitting to standing to walking, and stooping, bending, carrying, stretching, lifting and climbing
- Ability to push and pull moderately heavy trolleys of books, and to move heavy furniture as required
- Ability to understand basic oral and written instructions
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Library experience is an asset
Must be a current Cape Breton University student. Hours for this position will be a mix of day, afternoon, evening, and weekend shifts, and will be scheduled around class times as determined by the Senior Library Technician, Circulation Services & Outreach.
Student assistants must maintain confidentiality, current awareness of University policies and campus events, and abide by the Library Student Assistant Code of Conduct.
