About The CMM
The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council representing the eight Mi’kmaq
communities of mainland Nova Scotia. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaq
communities’ initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of community. The CMM’s
Department of Health & Social Services (DHSS) is currently looking for an energetic, mature, and
independent candidate to fill the role of Cultural Youth Support Worker. This is a designated position
and restricted to those of Indigenous ancestry.
Position Overview
Reporting to the Director, Health and Social Services and the Mental Wellness Manager, the Youth
Support Worker supports The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (the CMM) in the provision of cultural
support and mentorship to children and youth in the eight (8) First Nation Communities on the Mainland of
Nova Scotia. This position will work along side a second Cultural Youth Support Worker in Paqtnkek,
Pictou Landing, Sipekne’katik, and Millbrook First Nation.
Overview of Responsibilities:
• Guide children and youth in accessing cultural activities as required.
• Provide children and youth with recreational activities and mentorship as required.
• Work with community-based Elders and Traditional Healers to provide cultural supports,
as necessary.
• Work with community elders and youth to facilitate knowledge sharing and communitybased mentoring programs
• Assist in the implementation and tracking of Individual Behavioural plan
• Provide youth on caseload with opportunities to develop and increase life skills
• Facilitating and coordinating youth group activities within community
• Collaborate with Health and Social Services staff to provide cultural workshops to youth.
Position Requirements:
• Must possess a child and youth diploma or have at least 2 years’ experience providing service to
youth living in First Nation Communities.
• Understand and demonstrate Mi’kmaq cultural practices and traditions.
• Use culture as a foundation of healing.
• Be familiar with Mi’kmaq organizations and communities.
• Understanding of the unique Mi’kmaq family unit.
• Strong initiative, motivation, conscientiousness, and dedication.
• Ability to be able to work unsupervised with a high level of productivity and the ability to seek and
take direction.
• Strong time management skills.
• Excellent verbal, written and computer skills.
• Must have a reliable vehicle, valid driver’s license, and the ability to travel throughout Mainland
Nova Scotia.
• Ability to work outside of normal working hours due to the requirements of the member
communities and clients.
• Must be willing to provide the CMM with a recent criminal record check and pass vulnerable
sector check and child abuse registry check.
• Fluency in the Mi’kmaq language (an asset).

Salary/Employment Term:
Salary Range: $49,071 – $68,700 per year. This is an 18-month contract position.
