Co-op/Internship Student Opportunity: Strategic Data Management

Duration: Fall term 2026 (September – December)
Location: Sydney, Nova Scotia (Hybrid/On-site)
Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Co-op Student to support our Strategic Data Management team. This position is policy-focused, providing hands-on experience in developing and improving data management policy instruments that will directly support the implementation of a Master Data Management (MDM) system. This placement provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting enterprise data initiatives within a public service environment.
The student will primarily contribute to policy development and analysis, while also providing support to the Information Governance Office (IGO).
Key Responsibilities
- Support the review, revision, and drafting of data management policy instruments, including directives, standards, and guidelines
- Conduct research and analysis to ensure policies align with data management best practices and Government of Canada requirements
- Analyze gaps in existing policies and recommend improvements to enhance and expand the data management policy suite
- Assist in identifying and documenting reference datasets used across the organization by identifying and supporting reference data stewards
- Support the Information Governance Office with secretariate tasks including documentation and coordination activities
- Develop briefing materials, documentation, and presentations
Qualifications
*Students must be enrolled in a relevant CBU Co-op or Internship Program
Required Knowledge & Skills
- Interest in learning about:
- Data management concepts and practices
- How organizations govern and steward shared data
- Policy development and documentation processes
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- English Essential required
Asset Qualifications
- Knowledge of:
- Reference and master data concepts and practices
- Data management concepts and practices
- Data governance
- Policy development processes
- Familiarity with the Canadian federal public service environment
- Experience with data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI, or similar)
- Bilingual (English/French)
