Job Title: Government Relations Assistant
Position Reports to: Stakeholder Relations Manager
Start/end date: September 8 – Dec 19
Hours per week: 35 (Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. or 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.)
Hourly wage: $25/hour
Work location: 68 Highfield Park Drive, Suite 112, Dartmouth NS. (Opportunity for some work-from-home)

Job Purpose Summary

The Nova Scotia Association of REALTORS® (NSAR) is the Association for REALTORS® in Nova
Scotia, representing over 2,000 members who subscribe to a high standard of service and a
strict code of ethics.

We act as one voice for real estate in Nova Scotia and
serve our members through a wide variety of education programs, training, advocacy and
administration of the MLS® System in Nova Scotia.

NSAR is a vibrant organization. While small, with only 15 staff, the Association and its members
play an integral role in the provincial economy and has excellent relations with its many
stakeholders.

The Government Relations Assistant is a team player who is good with deadlines and enjoys a
variety of projects and people. The Assistant will work directly with the Stakeholder Relations
Manager and Communications Director to implement the organization’s government and
stakeholder relations strategies. They will also have an opportunity to gain experience in
communications work.

NSAR tailors this role as much as possible to the student’s needs and opportunities for growth
and learning.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
1. Research: Conducts research and compiles reports that further NSAR policy positions,
including assisting with significant research projects, crafting policy recommendations,
and specific topical/policy research.
2. Writing: Helps produce reports, letters, briefings, social media messaging, and articles
related to advocacy positions and activities.
3. Key Messaging: Helps develop key messages for government and stakeholder
relations.
4. Advocacy engagement activities: Contribute to the planning, promoting, and
executing advocacy engagement work.
5. Presentations: Assists in the development of presentations and materials.
6. Statistics: Support gathering and communicating statistics to internal and external
audiences.
7. Issues monitoring: Monitors media for trends and issues related to the housing
industry and NSAR policy positions.
8. Events: Assists with coordinating special events (fundraising, information session, etc.)
9. Planning: Participate in the annual strategic planning process for the government and
stakeholder relations program.
10. Other projects/duties as required

Qualifications

Education: Progress toward completing a degree or certificate in Politics, Political Science,
Communications or a related discipline.
Skills: Excellent writing and editing skills; research skills; organized; attention to detail;
teamwork; confidentiality; initiative; ability to learn new programs quickly; working knowledge
of current political climate; working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.

Work term outcomes

1. Work with diverse teams and individuals across the organization to achieve advocacy
goals.
2. Participate and understand the importance of strategic planning to the advocacy
process, including setting measurable goals, outlining tactics, understanding
audiences, and evaluation.
3. Develop knowledge of advocacy communications through participation in writing for
internal and external audiences.
4. Expand professional network and understand the importance of relationships in
advocacy work.
