LCol (Ret) Michael Alteen CD started his military career as a dispatch rider with the Signals Corp in the Regular Force. This helped ignite his passion for classic motorcycles, a hobby he still enjoys during his retirement.
Upon leaving the Regular Force, Mr. Alteen returned to Cape Breton and joined The Cape Breton Highlanders. He has served in all positions within the unit and has left a lasting impact on his fellow members through the years. LCol Alteen left the unit to become the Commanding Officer of the 36 Service Battalion. Upon completing his time as Commanding Officer, LCol Alteen returned to The Cape Breton Highlanders and became the Commanding Officer in September 2000. During LCol Alteen’s tenure, he had the honour of accepting new Colours for the 2nd Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders, these colours were later retired when 2nd Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders were renamed The Cape Breton Highlanders in 2011.
Upon completing his time as Commanding Officer with The Cape Breton Highlanders, LCol Alteen served as the Cadet Liaison officer for all Cadet Army Corps in Cape Breton. LCol Alteen went on to serve as The Cape Breton Highlanders Honorary LCol.
Throughout his military career, LCol (Ret) Alteen ran a successful family jewellery business in downtown Sydney. Alteen’s Jewellers was open for 75, years which LCol. Alteen worked there for 55 years and retired in 2017. LCol (Ret) Michael Alteen is marred to Margie Alteen, and they have 3 children and live in Sydney Forks, NS.
