Unama'ki College LogoCape Breton University has enjoyed a strong partnership with the Aboriginal communities of Atlantic Canada since its earliest beginnings. Today, after 30 years of relationship building, program development and mutual commitment more than 250 Aboriginal students attend CBU. Close to 500 have graduated and Cape Breton University has the strongest record in the Atlantic region of providing Aboriginal students with post-secondary education and research opportunities.

Unama’ki College (formerly Mi’kmaq College Institute) of Cape Breton University strives to meet the needs of Mi’kmaw and other First Nations students and contribute to the educational goals set by Mi’kmaw communities. Working in consultation and cooperation with the university’s Mi’kmaw faculty and staff and other academic departments, Unama’ki College offers Aboriginal students the option to study in the academic program of their choice.

The Department of Indigenous Studies at Unama’ki College brings together full and part-time faculty members who are devoted to programs designed to meet the needs of Mi’kmaq students, and to introduce all CBU students and faculty to this region’s rich indigenous culture. Mi’kmaq Studies, Integrative Science and Community Studies all fall under the umbrella of the Indigenous Studies Department.
