Strategic Research Plan

Applicants may like to access our Strategic Research Plan to aid in the preparation of their application.

Pivot Funding Database

Pivot is an amazing grant database (and more) which CBU has recently subscribed to. You can access Pivot one of two ways:

1.  IP Access

From any on-campus computer, go right to http://pivot.cos.com. Because CBUs IP addresses will be recognized by Pivot, one can start searching for funding or faculty profiles right away.

2.  Username and Password

Faculty can log in at http://pivot.cos.com with a Pivot username and password anytime, anywhere. Logging in this way will take the user to his or her Pivot homepage. From their homepage, they can manageactive or tracked fundingopportunities, saved searches, shared opps, etc., and start searching for funding or scholars. Username and password access is necessary when a) a user is off-campus, or b) when a user needs to save a funding record or funding search.

Creating a Pivot account is easy - faculty can go http://pivot.cos.com and click the “Log In” option in the upper right of the screen. Clicking on “Login help” will present you with a screen where you can choose to create your account. You'll gain access to Pivot by indicating you're a member of CBU.

An introductory 30 minute webinar about using Pivot can be watched here. (On campus, no sign in is required).

Questions about Pivot can be directed to jodi_mcdavid@cbu.ca

Periodic training sessions will be held throughout the year.

Funding Deadlines

Listed below are the due dates for various Grant/Scholarship applications for faculty, staff and students. Please note that internal submission dates are a minimum of two (2) weeks prior to external deadlines. Some dates are based on prior calendar years, please contact the Research Advancement Officer (RAO) to determine if the funding agency has changed the date for this year's competition. All applications must be submitted to the Research Office for review and institutional signatures before they receive Cape Breton University approval.

Applicants are reminded that online forms provided by granting agencies (i.e. NSERC, SSHRC) frequently prevent direct submission to the funding agency, and that these applications are submitted via the funding agency to the Research Advancement Officer (RAO).  The RAO checks that institutional approval is in place, and submits the reseachers' application on their behalf.

Those researchers wishing to apply for Partnership funds, or major infrastructure grants (i.e. renovation grants), should contact the RAO as soon as possible.

Institutional Grants, Nominations & Reports

As part of its support services, the Office of Research and Graduate Studies applies for grants on behalf of CBU, and nominates faculty as appropriate for external research awards based on career success or potential.  We support all research applications, especially those which require institutional letters of support and description of the importance of the work within the CBU research strategy. When appropriate, ORGS also reports to funding agencies on behalf of CBU.
