Jason Callaghan was born into a basketball family. He and his brothers grew up on the court, with their father coaching the high school team and their mother supporting from the stands. When Jason earned the opportunity to play for the CBU CAPERS, there was no hesitation. He couldn’t wait to represent Cape Breton as a student-athlete and attend a university he says already felt like home. “I grew up watching the CAPERS, taking part in their basketball camps and dreaming of becoming a CBU athlete,” says Jason. “So to turn that dream into a reality has been incredible.” Jason is quickly adjusting to life as a student-athlete, excelling both as a CAPERS rookie and a first-year Bachelor of Science student. He says being able to develop personal relationships with professors and lab instructors has played an integral role in his academic success. Being a student-athlete isn’t a walk in the park, but with strong time-management skills, Jason believes stress can be prevented in the long run. “Although I’ve only been here for a short time, CBU has instilled in me that life is about hard work and taking pride in what you do,” says Jason. “Those are two things the university embodies wholeheartedly.” With Orange Out just around the corner on January 26, Jason can’t wait to get on the court and make the CBU community proud. “Wearing a CAPERS jersey means something to each and every one of us,” says Jason. “When you come out and cheer us on, it shows everyone what that jersey represents.” Jason has attended plenty of Orange Out games as a fan, and now it’s his turn to take centre stage. He says he is eager to play in front of his hometown, friends and family, and hopes the Sullivan Fieldhouse will be packed with CAPERS fans. “Feeling the support of the community gives us a huge advantage on the court,” says Jason. So come on out on Saturday, January 26, and cheer on Jason and the rest of the CBU CAPERS as they take on the Dalhousie Tigers. Games are at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. in the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
