Cape Breton University to Celebrate Fall 2025 Convocation Ceremonies

Cape Breton University will celebrate the success of close to 400 graduates on Wednesday, November 5, at 11:00am at the Kehoe Forum during the Fall Convocation Ceremony.

“It is a profound honour to celebrate this milestone with nearly 400 exceptional Cape Breton University students from across the globe,” says President and Vice-Chancellor, David C. Dingwall. “As they embark on the next chapter of their lives and join the proud ranks of CBU alumni, we are confident they will make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world. We wish each of them continued success and every happiness in the journey ahead.”

The graduating class, made up of students from more than 22 different programs, will receive their degrees, diplomas and certificates in a variety of languages, including French, Gaelic and Mi’kmaw.

Cape Breton University’s School of Nursing will be celebrating a milestone at this year’s Fall Convocation. This year’s Bachelor of Science, Nursing (BScN) graduating class includes the highest number of graduating Indigenous nurses in the program’s history. The result reflects sustained collaboration between the School of Nursing and Unama’ki College, including targeted advising, mentorship and culturally grounded student supports that help learners excel in the classroom and in clinical placements. CBU remains focused on evidence-informed teaching, clinical readiness and welcoming learning environments that support Indigenous student success.

Shareeve Gould of Eskasoni, Nova Scotia, is earning her Bachelor of Science, Nursing degree and will serve as Class Valedictorian. “Being chosen as the class Valedictorian has been a true honour,” Shareeve says. “As this not only recognizes my hard work throughout the years but also gives me the chance to represent my family, community and ancestors in the light of Indigenous success.”

Cape Breton University will also confer honorary doctorates on two remarkable individuals whose contributions have left a lasting mark on their fields and communities. Lifelong Cape Bretoner Dr. David Kennedy will receive a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, for his work to modernize animal care and strengthen the Island’s economy through innovation, mentorship and community dedication. A cherished voice in Cape Breton’s Celtic music scene, Mr. Donnie Campbell will receive a Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, for his nationally recognized lifelong dedication to sharing and promoting local and Celtic music.

Several outstanding CBU students will also be recognized for their achievements and contributions. Bachelor of Science, Nursing graduates Ashley Lazzarotto will receive the Sara J. Smith Nursing Scholarship and Xavier Hmidan will receive the Catherine Grace MacLeod Memorial Nursing Award for their professionalism, perseverance and compassionate dedication to the nursing profession. The Cape Breton University Silver Medal for Academic Achievement will be presented to Bachelor of Science, Nursing graduate Victoria Roach for achieving the highest academic standing.

All members of the community are invited to the Kehoe Forum to celebrate the graduating class. Tickets are not required; however, seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The ceremony will also be livestreamed at cbu.ca/convocation.
