Cape Breton University Launches Microcredential Offerings

Cape Breton University is pleased to announce Microcredentials, a new learning opportunity for those looking to expand their skillset.

These unique learning experiences are designed to be affordable, accessible and focus on specific skills and competencies that provide learners an opportunity to advance their knowledge and abilities for career development and personal growth.

Microcredentials are non-credit, stand-alone, practical and up-to-date with modern practices. Developed to meet the needs of adult learners and working professionals, registration is open to everyone regardless of prior knowledge or experience. Upon completion of the training, successful participants receive a digital CBU branded badge which they can display or use on their resume.

“We’re very excited to offer community-based education that provides the skills training our alumni and community stakeholders have been asking for,” says A.J. Fraser, Senior Project Manager, Microcredentials. “Being able to deliver short and affordable programming that meets the needs of people with busy lives gives CBU more ways to connect with and serve our Island’s people, and beyond. I’m looking forward to working with our local entrepreneurs, public sector employees, non-profit organizations and life-long learners to find ways to meet their education needs.”

This November, CBU will offer one of the first microcredentials, Cybersecurity for Everyone, developed and delivered by Darren Gallop, Cybersecurity Specialist and CEO of Carbide. Join Darren November 23, 30 and December 7, 14, online to learn about the various domains of cybersecurity, best-practices for organizations, protecting your online personas and devices and mitigating against phishing and social engineering.

Throughout the four weeks Gallop will lead participants through a risk assessment process and help them in developing a security plan for their own organization using modern tools and industry expertise. Once a learner is assessed to have acquired this competency, they’re issued the Cybersecurity for Everyone microcredential in the form of a digital badge to share with current and prospective employers, industry associations or on social media platforms like Linked-In.

All are welcome and no previous experience is required. Registration for Cybersecurity for Everyone is $240 +HST and can be done here.

Microcredentials will be delivered year round, with new skills and topics added to CBU’s offerings frequently. To learn more and stay up to date, visit cbu.ca/microcredentials or email microcredentials@cbu.ca.
