Tuition Deadline Extended to February 17, 2023

To the Cape Breton University Student Community,

Strikes are stressful for everyone, but especially for our students. In response to the ongoing CBUFA strike, the Winter tuition deadline will be extended from January 30, 2023, to February 17, 2023* (*See note below).

We understand students have questions about why they should be expected to pay tuition when the majority, or all, of their courses are currently paused. At this time, we remain hopeful that an agreement will be reached between CBU and CBUFA, and that the semester will not be lost. Our goal is to ensure that students will proceed to the spring semester or on to the next step in their journey as scheduled following the end of the winter semester.

As previously stated, CBU will not benefit financially from this strike. Any funds accumulated throughout the strike as a result of unpaid CBUFA salaries will be returned to students. CBU will work with the CBUSU to determine the appropriate formula to distribute funds fairly to all those impacted. Amounts will depend on the length of the strike and other factors, which is why compensation will not be distributed until the strike has been resolved. As always, we encourage you to review our student FAQs regularly, and contact us at labour@cbu.ca with any unanswered questions.

*Please note: Payments must be received by the tuition deadline to be considered on-time. Online/international payment methods take 4-6 business days to process through the banking system, and an additional 10-14 business days for international banking transactions to be received by CBU. Please take processing time into consideration to ensure your payments are received by February 17, 2023.

Please note: In-person hours of operation are 9:00am-4:00pm with a closure from 12:30-1:30pm daily. To avoid lines, we encourage students to pay online whenever possible. Many students have limits of $1000 on their cards. Please check this with your bank before visiting campus to make in-person payments.
