Sometimes, one conversation can change everything. For Jordyn Parsons, it was a chat with a college professor who encouraged her to look into a two-year transfer to the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public Health) at Cape Breton University. That advice opened the door to new opportunities, new friendships and a bright future in her hometown as she prepares for her graduation in Spring 2025.
Originally from Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Jordyn was enrolled in the Environmental Engineering Technology program at the College of the North Atlantic. When she expressed interest in continuing her studies, one of her professors suggested that she might be eligible to transfer to CBU. “After graduating with my diploma, I knew I wasn’t done with my education, and I wanted to come to CBU to get my bachelor’s,” Jordyn says. “What I enjoy most about my program is that it merges my two biggest interests, the environment and healthcare.”
CBU’s welcoming and supportive learning environment has affirmed that Jordyn was exactly where she needed to be. She credits three Public Health instructors, Michelle Prendergast, Melissa McDonald and Paul MacDougall, for making an especially lasting impact. “They have really emanated what I think CBU is all about – community and support,” she shares.
Outside the classroom, Jordyn found her community through the Public Health Society, where she started as a volunteer representative and is now the grad representative. She has participated in many activities, from CBU’s Open House and the health fair to society events like pumpkin carving. “The thing I will miss most about CBU is the people,” says Jordyn. “I have never felt so welcomed and celebrated in my life. I’ve made great friends, and I even met the love of my life here.”
Jordyn says her time at CBU has given her the tools she needs to succeed, both professionally and personally. “If you are thinking of coming to CBU, go for it,” she adds. “You will make connections that will last you a lifetime, and you’ll be more than ready for your future career by the end of your program.”
Looking back, Jordyn is especially grateful for her mom, who has always been her biggest cheerleader. “I’m hoping to take her to Italy one day; that’s her dream,” she shares. “You never know where life is going to take you, but I think that’s a good thing. It’s a never-ending rollercoaster ride, but the people sitting next to you holding your hand make it all worth it.”
With graduation around the corner, Jordyn is excited to start a position as an environmental health specialist trainee in her hometown in Newfoundland. To her fellow graduates, she wishes them the best in their future endeavours. “I hope life treats you well and you have many moments that remind you that life can be so much more than you ever thought it could be.”
Congratulations to Jordyn and the entire graduating class of Spring 2025!
