My CBU Story: Brigid Milburn

For Brigid Milburn, graduating from Cape Breton University’s Bachelor of Science, Nursing program marks not only the completion of an academic journey but also the fulfillment of a deeply-held desire to serve her local community. Born and raised in Sydney, Brigid always knew that CBU was where she wanted to be, especially given her passion for healthcare and the opportunity to give back to the people and place that have shaped her life.

“Growing up in Cape Breton, I always felt a strong connection to CBU,” says Brigid. “When I decided to pursue Nursing, it felt like the obvious choice. Learning from people within your own community is incredibly special, and I hope to one day give back to those who’ve supported me along the way.”

Throughout her nursing studies, Brigid particularly valued the hands-on experiences provided by CBU’s Nursing program. Training in various small hospitals across the region allowed her not only to sharpen critical skills but also to build meaningful connections with patients and healthcare professionals alike. “The hands-on experience in smaller hospitals was definitely one of the highlights of my education,” she says. “It allowed me to directly apply what I learned in the classroom and genuinely connect with patients.”

Among her many positive experiences at CBU, Brigid fondly recalls her Pharmacology class taught by Assistant Professor, Dena Edwards Wadden, whose teaching style left a significant impression. “Professor Wadden inspired genuine interest in pharmacology,” Brigid shares. “She taught us by example, making complex material engaging and approachable.”

Another memorable aspect of Brigid’s journey was her involvement with the Nursing Society, an experience she describes as the highlight of her time at CBU. Through the society, she developed close friendships and found new ways to grow as a leader while advocating for her peers.

As graduation approaches, Brigid is looking forward to a well-deserved summer break as a lifeguard at Point Michaud Beach in St. Peters, with plans to travel for a year or two afterward. She then intends to return home and apply to the Cape Breton Medical Campus, continuing her journey in healthcare.

Reflecting on her upcoming graduation, Brigid admits she will miss the close friendships she’s formed during her time at CBU the most. The Nursing program has taught her invaluable lifelong skills, discipline and the importance of community.

For students considering CBU, Brigid offers straightforward advice, “You will get as much out of university as you put into it. Work hard, get involved and put yourself out there as much as possible.”

Congratulations to Brigid and the entire Spring 2025 Graduating Class!
