Don’t Miss Out on Family WISE 2019

You still have time to sign up for Family WISE 2019, happening this Saturday at CBU!
You won’t want to miss this great Women in Science event, presented by Island WISE. On Saturday, March 2, young women in grades 8-12 are invited to the Verschuren Centre for a day of interactive learning.
This year, participants are encouraged to bring a role model of their choice to join in the fun. “We believe it’s important to bring awareness about opportunities available to young women in science, both to the students themselves, as well as their biggest influencers,” says Dr. Stephanie MacQuarrie, CBU Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry. “Family WISE is an engaging event designed to highlight these opportunities while enjoying a great day on campus together.”
The retreat, which takes place from 10:30 a.m. -4:00 p.m. will feature hands-on learning activities, alumni presentations, free CBU registration, career and info booths, door prizes and so much more.
Career and information booths at the event include ACAP, Dillion, CBU Engineering, the Verschuren Centre, Techsploration, Nova Scotia Power, Marine Atlantic, Protocase and the Canadian Coast Guard College.
We have a talented team featuring a fermentation specialist and several chemists to speak about the chemistry of food, and participants will get to make their own butter while learning about the chemistry behind the process.
Alumni presentations will be given by Dr. Jessica Prendergast, Biology Honours Alumna and local optometrist; Lindsay Hawco, Chemistry/Engineering Double Major Alumna and research scientist; and Becky Hooper, Math Honours Alumna and programmer at Protocase.
Last but not least, there will be an AMAZING SCIENCE RACE featuring hands-on science challenges and awesome prizes including gym passes, theatre passes, science socks and scarves, books, hats and more.
