Purdy Crawford Chair in Aboriginal Business Studies

Bringing Indigenous Business to Academia and the World!

Cape Breton University is currently home to more than 300 Indigenous students and is proud to call nearly 1,000 Indigenous students alumni. As the Atlantic Canadian leader in Indigenous post-secondary education, CBU has worked with Indigenous leaders to develop the Purdy Crawford Chair in Aboriginal Business Studies. The Purdy Crawford Chair aims to promote interest among Canada’s Indigenous people in the study of business at the post-secondary level, while undertaking pure and applied research. The Chair fosters entrepreneurship, investment, and corporate skills training to give Indigenous students the tools they need to shape their own futures and make exciting things happen in business and beyond.

Named in honor of the late Purdy Crawford, who held a Master of Laws degree from Harvard Law School, an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Cape Breton University and was a very involved member of the Shannon School of Business Advisory Board, the Purdy Crawford Chair in Aboriginal Business Studies focuses on the research of Indigenous business models, best practices in Indigenous economic development, case studies profiling Indigenous businesses, as well as national and international comparative analysis. The purpose of the Chair is to promote interest in studying business at the post-secondary level among Canada’s Indigenous people, as well as to encourage applied research specific to their communities.

The Chair is currently held by Dr. Mary Beth Doucette, a Mi’kmaw woman from Membertou, who just completed her PhD. Mary Beth also holds a Professional Engineering Designation as well as a Master of Business Administration in Community Economic Development.

CBU is proud of the relationship we’ve built with Indigenous students and communities across the country. The Purdy Crawford Chair helps to build upon these relationships and bring the Indigenous business community to center stage.
