The Department of Chemistry in the School of Science and Technology at Cape Breton University invites applications for a Full-Time Continuing role as a Chemical Stores and Instrument Technician/Specialist. This position will commence July 1 2024 (or as soon as possible thereafter).

The School of Science and Technology (SST) offers a diverse range of courses in science, engineering, and technology, including traditional programs like the Bachelor of Science and newer options like the Bachelor of Arts and Science in Environment. SST offers comprehensive education that combines academic study, hands-on learning, and real-world experience, preparing them for successful careers.

The successful candidate will be responsibly for managing the Chemical Stores Facility (CSF) and deal with managing the chemical stores and waste. The CSF primarily works wit the SST but can also provide support to other school. This role will also deal with the instrumentations for the department of Chemistry.

Some responsibilities for this role are but not limited to being responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Chemical Facilities Section (CFS), ensuring efficient organization and compliance. This includes maintaining an accurate inventory of stored chemicals and facilitating procurement and storage processes in collaboration with relevant departments.

You’ll also play a key role in dispensing reagents to faculty for academic activities and ensuring proper documentation and labelling of all inventoried products according to safety regulations and legislation. Additionally, you’ll manage label inventory and printing for workplace labels and oversee the collection and disposal of chemical waste products in adherence to safety protocols.

Your duties will extend to supporting instrument maintenance and operations within the chemistry department. This involves facilitating the purchase of major instruments, maintaining current instruments, troubleshooting issues, and coordinating repair and servicing visits from suppliers or manufacturers. The specific instrumentation will include NMR, UPLC-MS/MS and others decided upon in collaboration with the department Chair.

Furthermore, you’ll provide guidance and instruction on the proper use of key instruments for teaching and research purposes, ensuring smooth functionality and effective utilization across the department.

Candidates should have a Master’s degree in Chemistry, or a relevant professional accreditation equivalent to a Master’s degree.
