Job Description

Now more than ever – it is imperative that we have ongoing support and mentorship in place for our incoming students. With Covid19 creating a gap in students on campus we now have 2 years of students coming in who have no idea where we are situated and will need guidance.

Student Transition Coordinators are vital to fill the gap in peer support from our previous Peer Success Coaches. We know the work the STCs have been doing has been fundamental in engaging incoming students to participate in FYAC Information Sessions, Virtual Drop In hours and networking and collaboration with orientation, Start Smart, Campus tours and more!

The Student Transition Coordinators will work out of the First-Year Advising Centre (FYAC-Learning Commons) to provide advising, registration and online navigation support to students enrolling at CBU for the Winter term. They will help students transition to university by providing information on CBU’s programs, services, and resources to ensure students are empowered with access to this knowledge throughout the year.

Duties/Responsibilities

The Student Transition Coordinators will work out of the First-Year Advising Centre (FYAC) to provide advising, registration and online navigation support to students enrolling at CBU for the Winter term. They will help students transition to university by providing information on CBU’s programs, services, and resources to ensure students are empowered with access to this knowledge throughout the year.

In addition, the Student Transition Coordinators will:
• Work independently and as part of the FYAC advising team
• Help students schedule advising appointments and follow ups
• Connect students to Academic Success Coaches – maintain relationships between advisor and incoming student.
• Provide Peer Mentorship, assist in planning and promotion of DeStress Fest and workshops
• Greet incoming students and keep appointments operating smoothly
• Maintain ongoing communication with students, academic advisors and university faculty and staff
• Assist with Orientations planning and promotion (Winter semester)
• Teach students how to understand the timetable to create a class schedule
• Teach students to navigate the CBU website, access their CBU email, access their student account, and complete their registration
• Answer phone and email inquiries
• Complete various organizational tasks

Qualifications

Current CBU Student in good academic standing
Enrolled in Undergraduate Studies or Post-Baccalaureate program

Knowledge of:
– Compass Student Account
– Registration Processes
– Services and Supports

Mental Health First Aid Training an asset.

New responsibilities to accommodate large student population that has never been on campus and pilot mentorship to support students facing barriers related to stigma and marginality.
Student Transition Coordinators will participate in the holistic and ongoing peer mentorship of students focusing on our new incoming student population with a specific focus on our most marginalized student populations by:
• Co-facilitating, organizing and participating in on campus and virtual events for incoming students with a focus on marginalized students.
Examples include: Meet and Greets, Drop In hours for registration support and Peer Q&As.
• At minimum one monthly collaboration/project with another department/team/person such as Dionne Romard – Student Development Officer for African Canadian Students, our International Student Office, the JKC, the Pride and Ally Centre through CBUSU, etc.
• Liaising with Dionne Romard – Student Development Officer for African Canadian & African Nova Scotian Students.
• Liaising with Bree Menge and the staff at Unama’ki College.
• Liaising with the Jennifer Keeping Centre.
• Liaising with our International Student Advisors.
• Liaising with other groups on campus as needed to encompass role in supporting peer mentorship with marginalized students.
This addition to their current duties and responsibilities above will provide students with an opportunity to think critically about diverse workplaces and consider who is missing when they apply for positions outside of CBU. Students will gain skills mentoring students outside of their demographic and engage in providing equitable services to marginalized students.
