Job/Project Description: Curatorial Assistant for the CBU Cameron Zoological Museum 

Job/Project Description The Curatorial Assistant will gain skills in basic museum techniques, with a focus on designing, printing and painting 3D bird themed models. The position provides experiential learning through the implementation of 3D printing and painting techniques, the application of museum protocols, involvement with education and public outreach and creativity in science, art and technology.

Responsibilities:
The student will be responsible for assisting in producing 3D printed avian models to add to the museum holdings and for use in teaching, education and community outreach programming. Additional responsibilities will include working with the supervisor to develop displays that are both artistic and educational featuring 3D printed specimens and administrating the inventory of bird specimens contained in our zoology museum.

Student Qualifications:

The candidate should possess:

  • good organizational, communication and computer skills (Microsoft Office familiarity)
  • interest and aptitude in art, technology and a biology background
  • interest in the promotion of science through visual arts
  • basic knowledge of Cape Breton birds (preferred but not required)
  • basic experience with 3D printing (preferred but not required)

Tasks:

The student will be assigned tasks including but not limited to assisting in:

– designing, preparing and painting 3D printed specimens for display, interactive exhibits and educational purposes

– researching 3D printing patterns (e.g. bird eggs, skulls, claws, beaks)

– promoting institutional and public awareness of Cape Breton/Unama’ki species by designing promotional material

– updating inventory and digital cataloguing of bird specimens at the CBU Zoology museum.
