About the Job: 

This position is meant to aid Professor Long (SSOB) in research duties associated with a project in economic history. The candidate will have an interest in regional economic development in Atlantic Canada. This position will involve digitizing data from historical documents. This can be done manually or or with computer assistance, the latter of which is preferred. Professor Long will provide guidance in this regard, but the ideal candidate will have some experience with Python or computer programming in general. There will be some potential for the candidate to participate in analyzing the final product along with Professor Long.

Tasks/Duties:

  • Manual entry of data from historical statistical reports.
  • Technology assisted entry of said data. This includes working in Python to conduct optical character recognition and analysis of text data.

Expected Learning Outcomes:

  • Opportunity to gain exposure to the economic history of Atlantic Canada, with a specific focus on the role of local governments in affecting community economic development.
  • Introduced to research methods in economic history and modern tools from computer science that can be used to digitize, preserve and analyze data from historical publications.

Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled, full time, at Cape Breton University and in good academic standing.
