Trade Commissioner Assistant: Global Affairs Canada

Hours: 37.5 per week

Position Description:

As a part of Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) has over 160 offices around the world and across Canada. The TCS represents an extensive network of trade professionals ready to help Canadian businesses, research centres and educational institutions succeed in international markets.

CanExport SMEs is a TCS grants and contributions program that provides financial assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) registered in Canada to help them develop export opportunities for their product or service in new international markets.

We are looking for five students to be part of the CanExport SMEs team and to provide support to Trade Commissioners in the delivery of the program to clients.

Primary Duties:

  • Conduct research in areas of international trade and business development
  • Assess funding applications
  • Provide statistical analysis of program outcomes
  • Answer client enquiries to resolve issues and clarify guidelines
  • Manage client relationships using Excel and Global Affairs Canada’s client relationship management software
  • Perform miscellaneous administrative tasks as required

Eligibility:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen
  • Must be willing to work in Ottawa
  • Must be upper-year undergraduate (3rd or 4th year) or master’s student, currently registered full-time in international business, business administration, commerce, marketing, economics, political science, international affairs / international relations, public administration / public policy, geography, languages, or any other relevant degree
  • Must have completed at least one full-time co-op (preferably in an office setting)

Essential Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats
  • Ability to thrive in a high pressure and fast paced work environment
  • Experience researching, analyzing and synthesizing data from a variety of sources
  • Excellent judgement, tact and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and work under tight deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel

Asset Qualifications:

  • Valid Secret security clearance
  • Working knowledge of French
  • Experience working for government and/or in a client-service environment
  • Experience working with client relationship management software / databases
  • Knowledge of international business development and trade promotion

You must meet the eligibility qualifications in order to be appointed to the position. Asset qualifications may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed. The position is in Ottawa (111 Sussex Drive). Any travel and related expenses, including moving for the co-op period, will be at the student’s expense. The Co-op student will work full-time for one term from May 4th to August 28th, 2020.
