Working Hours: 35 hours per week, 14 weeks

Rate: $13.65 per hour

Job Summary
Looking for an opportunity to work with the public in a dynamic setting? Join the team at Nova Scotia’s premier hands-on science centre and be part of the fun in bringing informal science experiences to visitors of all ages. As a Bilingual STEM Science/Technology/Engineering/Math) Facilitator you will be a member of the visitor experience team working in the fun and challenging setting of a hands-on science centre. The Facilitator will use both official languages to orient and assist visitors, interpret exhibits, and deliver exciting science demonstrations in the featured gallery of the centre. The featured gallery exhibition, Amazing Butterflies, engages visitors in the discovery of the mysterious lifecycle from caterpillar to butterfly. The facilitator will work as a member of the science experience team to provide the bilingual presence in this key area, review materials related to the exhibition, and develop/present program scripts in French and promote the use of French within the area. The facilitator will build on the gallery’s core themes with visitors to promote problem solving and creative thinking.
About Discovery Centre: For well over 30 years, the Discovery Centre has developed a reputation for being Nova Scotia’s leader in the delivery of exciting hands-on, minds on science programming for young people. The Discovery Centre mission is to bring STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Math) to life through, fun interactive learning experiences.

Qualifications: One or a combination of education, science, museum studies or a related field at a post-secondary level. Experience in a museum, science centre or recreational setting an asset. Experience in a front-line setting dealing with the public required. Bilingualism in French (spoken) and English is required. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements for the Young Canada Works in Both Official Languages summer employment program.

Description of Tasks:
The STEM Facilitator works in the Science Education/Experience department under the supervision of the Manager of Science Education. The primary tasks are:
1) to facilitate the visitor’s experience within the centre with a focus on the featured gallery – Amazing Butterflies exhibition gallery
2) to present live science shows and demonstrations
3) to create an atmosphere of fun and enjoyment around the topic of science (STEM)
4) to maintain a safe and clean environment for visitors
5) to work within a team-oriented environment, collaborating on new initiatives, developing scheduling plans, engaging visitors in the science centre experience
