A successful information and records management (RIM) program protects and preserves information and records needed by the Minister, and departmental staff, to make informed decisions, thereby ensuring that the department serves the citizens of Nova Scotia in a transparent and accountable manner.

At the Department of Public Works, a small group of dedicated information professionals have created a collaborative and supportive team environment.  This team works tirelessly to achieve their RIM objectives through the guidance and advisory support they provide to the department’s divisional and district office staff.

About Our Opportunity

As a student of records management, you will be able to put the theory you’ve learned into practice as you deal hands-on with records creation, control, protection and disposal.

Primary Accountabilities

You will assist staff with a wide range of duties, which support the department’s Central Registry and contribute to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the department’s RIM program:

  • Performing regular and consistent data entry to ensure records control in accordance with established departmental procedures
  • Participating in the annual departmental records transfer/disposal in accordance with the department’s retention schedules
  • Contributing to the maintenance of the department-wide records management system
  • And participating in the inventory and assessment of corporate records

Qualifications and Experience

You are a student currently enrolled in a records management, archival or library program, and returning to school in the fall (or in the next applicable semester for the education program).

A records management career involves a particular mindset, including organization and attention to detail; we’re looking for you to bring a passion for efficiency and accuracy to our team.

If you’re not interested in pursuing a career in records management, but you want to improve your organizational skills and attention to detail, we still want to hear from you.  Even if your area of focus is sciences, law, etc., we can offer you ample opportunities to participate in, and collaborate with, a variety of staff on special projects; you will enhance or develop these skills and can apply these practically to your classroom studies and future opportunities.

  • Are proficient in a computer environment, with a working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, database applications, and email

  • Are committed to protecting the integrity and reliability of records

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

  • The normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day
  • Typically located in a comfortable office environment
  • Much of the time is spent in a comfortable position with frequent opportunities to move about
  • Regularly reads and interprets multiple sources of information, the regular requirement to type, read and work on a computer
  • May experience pressure with deadlines and need for accuracy

This position will be based out of the Johnston Building at 1672 Granville Street, Halifax.

Pay Grade:  HOURLY

Salary Range:  $17.25 – $28.12 Hourly
