To support this challenge, the Bio Marine Team is currently seeking a student Research Assistant to support product/process development activities and do so within a collaborative team environment.

Qualifications – An ideal student research assistant will:

  • Be working towards an undergraduate degree in chemistry/biochemistry/chemical engineering/bioengineering/food science/microbiology/life sciences or similar fields.
  • Willing to work with marine substrates.
  • Have hand hands-on laboratory experience including some training in basic biochemistry

    techniques (such as but not limited to UV-vis spectrometer, enzymatic hydrolysis, solvent

    extractions, liquid chromatography, microplate reader, gas chromatography).

  • Organized, and able to record, analyse and present experimental data.
  • Willing to work in a small team in a fast-paced environment.
  • demonstrate ability to work independently, responsibly and manage time efficiently, while muti-

    tasking.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Independently plan and perform analytical characterization, coordinate, and compile data for various projects.
  • Prepare samples for external analysis which includes communication and managing relationships with external stakeholders, in addition to carrying out data analysis with external results.
  • Perform primary literature or patent search as required for project.
  • Book and operate specialized equipment and instruments for internal and external projects.
  • Data acquisition, analysis, rigorous documentation as well as preparation reports for internal and
  • Assist in upstream and downstream processing as necessary for the extraction or fractionation of specific compounds/fraction.
  • Support with scale-up processing activities.
  • Complete assigned tasks independently in a timely and organized manner, following reporting procedure to supervisor.
  • Work collaboratively with team members and supervisor to ensure timely completion of deliverables for SME and corporate clients working with the VC.
  • Maintain a clean and safe laboratory and workstation. Observe and promote all lab and occupational health and safety practices in the laboratory environment.

This position is open for 4 months starting May 2023 with opportunities to extend to 8 or 12 months. The position is based out of Sydney, Nova Scotia.
