At the Department of Public Works, we manage 23,000 kilometres of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges across Nova Scotia. At head office in PW, we operate in a fast-paced environment with ever changing priorities.

We are looking for an engaged summer administrative student who is eager to undertake new activities to enrich and enhance our environment.

About Our Opportunity

As the Administrative student, you will gain practical administrative experience and receive training and mentorship from highly qualified public service professionals. You will support Highway Programs within the PW Head Office.

There will be opportunity for you to participate in and collaborate with various staff on special projects or assignments; helping you further enhance and develop your skills. We also provide you with the opportunity to participate in various training opportunities including First Aid and WHMIS.

Primary Accountabilities

You will assist administrative staff with a wide range of duties which contribute to the overall effectiveness and efficiency our operations. You will be involved with:

  • Answering and redirecting phone calls to appropriate personnel
  • Providing top-notch customer service to various stakeholders including the public, contractors, and department staff
  • Organizing, filing, and preparing documents (such as digitizing files and highway reports)
  • Preparing correspondence
  • Reviewing a variety of reports
  • Working with other summer students on building wide initiatives
  • Other duties are required

Qualifications and Experience

You are currently enrolled as a student and returning to a postsecondary institution in the fall (or in the next applicable semester for the education program).

As the ideal candidate you:

  • Are familiar with computers including office software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint;
  • Are well-organized, tactful and maintain a courteous disposition;
  • Possess a positive attitude and excellent communication skills;
  • Have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Are a quick learner and have ability to adjust to changes in priorities; and
  • Maintain confidentiality in your work.

Working Conditions

  • Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.
  • Typically located in a comfortable office environment.
  • Much of the time is spent in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about.
  • Regularly reads and interprets multiple sources of information, regular requirement to type, read and work on a computer.
  • May experience pressure with deadlines and need for accuracy.

This position will be based out of the Johnston Building at 1672 Granville Street, Halifax.

Pay Grade:  HOURLY

Salary Range:  $17.25 – $28.12 Hourly
