Marketing Coordinator
Department: Administration

President & CEO
Position Category: Full time Co-op
Wage: $17.00 per hour
Hours of Work: 35 hours per week; 16 weeks

Position Summary:
For over 35 years, the Discovery Centre has developed a reputation for being Nova Scotia’s
leader in the delivery of exciting hands-on, minds-on science programming for youth.
The main objective of this position is to develop a social media presence for Discovery Centre
International, a project operated by the Discovery Centre. The Marketing Coordinator will
utilize their experience in social media to plan, execute, and maintain social media channels for
the project.

Description of Tasks:
The Marketing Coordinator works in the Administration department and reports to the VP
Discovery Centre International. The primary tasks of the position are:
• Assisting with social media planning for all channels; creating and maintaining business
apps including Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and YouTube
• Creating, maintaining, and and monitoring online and social media schedule of activities
utilizing automated digital marketing applications
• Leveraging web analytics and recommended strategies to improve web usage and
digital content; improving website traffic utilizing evaluation of analytics and other
marketing channels
• Generating engaging graphic material for Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn
posts
• Assisting in gathering data research on existing customers, new target markets and
competitors
• Assisting in the project proposal writing process
• Helping to coordinate virtual promotional presentations
• Performing other relevant duties as assigned

Qualifications:
Education: Post-secondary studies in marketing, public relations, business development,
communications, journalism, or a related discipline
Experience: Minimum of two years experience in digital media, marketing, communications, or
public relations
Language Requirements: Fluency in English is required; additional languages (especially French)
considered an asset

Other Qualifications:
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and Adobe Creative
• Experience with all social media platforms, their respective audiences and how to
manage and grow reach
• Knowledge of Search Engine Optimization including keyword research and Google
Analytics
• Experience with WordPress content management tools
• Basic design and video editing skills
• Knowledge in direct marketing, market segmentation, research, and data collection
would be an asset

Eligibility: Applicants must be current students returning to post-secondary studies in Fall
2023 and must qualify for the Nova Scotia Co-Op Program in order to be considered.

Workplan:
Week 1: Training and orientation, including occupational health and safety,
building and operations, job-specific training, and Discovery Centre as
a whole; team meetings; review of position objectives
Weeks 2-16: Planning, executing, and maintaining social media channels;
evaluating analytics to make improvements; generating content;
gathering data, weekly check ins with supervisor
Week 16: Compiling of final report; debriefing with supervisor; performance
evaluation

Measurable Outcomes:
The Marketing Coordinator will:
• Improve web traffic and social media engagement for Discovery Centre International
• Create and maintain a social media presence on all platforms
• Measure success of marketing efforts through analytics

The student will understand and take ownership of outcomes through a combination of
training, self-directed study, and ongoing support from their manager and team. Through
regular communication with their manager, incremental objectives will be set to ensure
progress. One mid-term performance evaluation will be conducted, and the successful
completion of outcomes will be addressed in this meeting and in a final performance
evaluation. At the end of the 16 weeks, the VP Discovery Centre International will provide the
student with an overall assessment of their performance.

Orientation and Training:
The Marketing Coordinator’s orientation will include a briefing on the Discovery Centre and the
Discovery Centre International project, in addition to training specific to the role.
Occupational health and safety is a key organizational priority for the Discovery Centre, so the
individual will receive thorough training on the Centre’s occupational health and safety policies
and procedures, emergency protocols, building safety, first aid training (if applicable), and any
safety training that is specific to their role.

The individual will be given all applicable Discovery Centre policies, including the respectful
workplace policy and code of conduct. They will be required to familiarize themselves with
these policies and uphold the values and responsibilities outlined in them.

The Marketing Coordinator will be required to participate in general staff meetings and
department meetings. They will be encouraged to be as familiar with our Centre and its modes
of operation as possible.
