Position Summary:

Cape Breton Regional Library invites applications for a Technical Services student assistant position for the summer of 2022 at:

 

Cape Breton Regional Library Headquarters, Sydney This is a temporary full-time term position with an anticipated start date ASAP and an end date in late August, with the possibility that the employee may choose to continue to work on a part-time basis during the academic year.

 

About the CBRL

Cape Breton Regional Library (CBRL) is a public library system with 12 branches and a bookmobile in Cape Breton Regional Municipality and Victoria County. CBRL is part of Same Page, a partnership of eight regional libraries across Nova Scotia. Same Page provides residents of Nova Scotia with easy access to almost 1,000,000 materials held at over

60 public library locations across the province.

 

Essential Job Responsibilities/Duties:

Under the direction of the Library’s technical services team, the student assistant will work on any or all of the following tasks:

 

Processing library material requests to send to other libraries using CBRL’s Integrated Library System (ILS) computer software.

Receiving and processing incoming materials and returns.

Retrieving items from carts and shelves.

Preparing items for mailing to other libraries Delivering outgoing packages to the library headquarters’ garage daily with a cart.

Handling library materials appropriately and with care.

Other duties as assigned

Hours of work:

Up to 35 hours per week between the hours of 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Schedule changes may be required according to Library needs.

 

Required Skills:

Per employment grant requirements, candidates must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment AND registered as a full-time post-secondary student for the upcoming academic year on a full-time basis.

 

Technology skills with a proficiency in a Windows-based environment.

The ability to communicate professionally in person, over the phone, and through email.

High attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to follow precise procedures.

Flexibility in changing from one task to another.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Ability to work well as part of a team and independently.

General knowledge of the library’s collection and services.

Previous library experience a plus.

Physical demands and work environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to stand, walk, sit, use hands to manipulate and move objects, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, and lift/move up to 35 pounds.  Must be able to have repetitive wrist hand and/or finger movement to type and work on computer. Must have finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination to work on computer, telephone, and related office equipment. The individual will regularly be required to sit, type, and focus on a computer monitor for prolonged periods.
