About Our Opportunity

Many Mi’kmaw communities and organizations in Nova Scotia are taking steps to increase community food security and develop agricultural businesses. The Department of Agriculture wishes to support and learn from community efforts in a spirit of reconciliation. As the Etuaptmumk Coordinator, you will work with the Department of Agriculture to incorporate the principles of netukulimk and etuaptmumk into our programs and services. You will also engage with Nova Scotia’s Mi’kmaw Communities, both on and off reserve, to support community food security and agricultural and food entrepreneurship efforts. An important component of this role will be to work with the Department of Agriculture’s Agriculture in the Classroom – Nova Scotia program to promote agricultural careers to Mi’kmaw youth in Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey schools as well as Indigenous students in the public school system.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Works with Community, government, and other stakeholders to facilitate support for Mi’kmaw Communities related to community food security and food system entrepreneurship.
  • Act as a cultural liaison between Mi’kmaw Communities, the Department of Agriculture, and the broader agricultural community.
  • Assists the Agriculture in the Classroom – Nova Scotia program with the development and delivery of classroom resources and student programs, including resources for Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey schools.
  • Supports the implementation of Honouring Mi’kmaw Roots, the Department of Agriculture’s entrance scholarship and summer work experience for a Mi’kmaw post-secondary student.

Qualifications and Experience

As the ideal candidate you will have a Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of 5 years’ experience. Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application. Experience may include both work experience as well as cultural experience.

The following skills or work experience would be assets:

  • Youth leadership development and/or classroom experience
  • Sound understanding of netukulimk and etuaptmumk
  • Direct connection to one of the 13 Mi’kmaw communities
  • Experience in the agriculture or food sectors, including at the community food security level
  • Experience leading community-based projects
  • Experience working with Mi’kmaw communities and organizations
  • Strong networking, collaboration, and communication skills
  • Capacity for independent work
  • Interest and ability in bringing a two-eyed seeing lens to the workplace

Equivalency

An equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered. Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

Equivalent experience and training include, but are not limited to:

  • Minimum 9 years of experience.
  • 2-years diploma + minimum 7 years of experience.

Working Conditions

  • This role is primarily based in an office environment. You may be working at your computer for extended periods of time.
  • The location for this position is flexible and the successful candidate will have an option of choosing from any of the locations- Sydney, Truro-Bible Hill, or Kentville.  Please clearly mention in your resume/cover letter which location you would prefer.
  • Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day
  • May be required to work overtime on occasion
  • Must have access to reliable transportation

Pay Grade:  PR 13  

Salary Range:  $2,396.86 – $2,913.59 Bi-Weekly
