The Department of Health and Wellness (DHW) offers opportunities to learn and grow in a dynamic sector that affects the lives of all Nova Scotians.  Along with our partners, we’re committed to continually improving Nova Scotia’s health care system.  We are looking for two master’s-level summer students (May-August 2020) who embrace a challenge and believe in their ability to make a difference.  Our areas of focus include collaborative primary health care, continuing care, improved supports for mental health and addictions, digital health, capital infrastructure and more.

The Advanced Analytics team within the DHW has the responsibility to integrate knowledge from health system and population health data assets to support data-driven decision making. The summer student contributes to health-related advanced analytical projects and modelling complex business problems, discovering business insights and identifying opportunities using statistical, algorithmic, mining and visualization techniques.

About Our Opportunity

The masters-level summer Co-op students can expect a varied, engaging and meaningful co-op work term on a variety of analytic projects.

We provide a unique opportunity for a master’s level student to support the division by integrating knowledge from health system and population health data assets for data-driven decision making. The student will support the Department’s work by contributing analytical techniques to help  reveal insights held within strategic data assets.  In addition to advanced analytical skills, the student will  be involved in designing and participating in communicating results to a broad group of stakeholders.

The student may also be required to conducts regular environmental scans to maintain an awareness of, and perspective on, current and anticipated health-related trends and legislation in Nova Scotia and other jurisdictions.

About You

To be eligible for this position, you must be currently be enrolled in a related master’s program (such as Master of Statistics, Economics, Political Science or Master of Public Administration) and returning to school in the fall of 2020 or require a work term for graduation. An undergraduate degree in Political Science, Economics or any discipline which encourages the assimilation and analysis of a wide range of diverse data would be considered an asset.  Demonstrated education and/or experience in policy analysis, research methods and report writing will also be required.

You are motivated and enthusiastic, ready to take on a variety of challenges. You are a capable relationship builder and excellent communicator when interacting with colleagues and stakeholders. As the successful candidate, you will have strong writing skills and be adept with Microsoft Office applications including Excel and PowerPoint.  You will also demonstrate independent judgment and tact in dealing with people and be able to exhibit a high level of professionalism. In addition, you will act with the greatest discretion, as confidential documents may be involved.

An offer of employment is conditional upon the completion of all applicable background checks and confirmation of credentials, the results of which must be satisfactory to the employer.

This full-time co-op position is anticipated to start on May 4, 2020, ending August 31, 2020.

Salary Range:  $22.78 – $26.37 Hourly
